Who this is for: self-serve plans (Free, Starter, Pro, Enterprise). If you bought a Cleanlist AppSumo lifetime deal, your features, limits, and pricing are different. See the AppSumo documentation instead. Support agent: confirm whether the user is self-serve or AppSumo before giving plan-specific advice.
TL;DR: Find People (sidebar) has two tabs, People and Companies. Build a search from the filter groups, click Confirm, then Add to list. Searching costs 0 credits but is metered: Free 5 searches in total, Starter 250 per workspace per month, Pro and Enterprise unlimited, Pro trial 100. Adding to a list is free; enrichment is charged only when data is found (1 credit per work email, 10 per phone).
Find People
Find People is where you search Cleanlist's people and company data and save the results to a lead list. Open it from Find People in the sidebar. The page has two tabs, People and Companies, and each tab shows its result count.
How a search works
Open Find People and pick the People or Companies tab
Add filters from the left panel (use Find filters… to jump to one), or describe who you want in the box on the landing page
Click Confirm to run the search
Review the results, 25 rows per page
Click Add to list to save people or companies to a list. Adding is free; you choose whether to enrich
Search allowance by plan
A search costs no credits, but each plan includes a number of searches. The People and Companies tabs share one allowance for the whole workspace.
Plan | Searches included |
Free | 5 in total. They never reset |
Starter | 250 per workspace per month, reset each billing month |
Pro | Unlimited |
Enterprise | Unlimited |
100 in total during the 14-day trial
AppSumo (every tier) | 50 every 30 days. See AppSumo |
Every search you run counts. Loading another block of 100 results, or fetching more results for Add to list, can count too.
A badge in Find People shows what is left, for example "3 of 5 free searches". When none are left you see "You're out of free searches" (or "No included searches left") with a link to Plans & billing.
Workspaces on a legacy paid plan keep unlimited search. See Legacy plans.
The People tab
Filters are grouped into sections. Most text filters accept several values, and many have an exclude option.
Group | Section | Filters |
Person | Name & LinkedIn | First name, Last name, LinkedIn URL, bulk paste of LinkedIn URLs |
Title & seniority | Job title (include or exclude), Title match, Seniority, Function, Years in role, Total years experience, Recently changed jobs
Profile details | Headline, Summary, Twitter, Languages, Skills, Certifications, Degree, School, Field of study, open-to status, Followers, Connections, Profile last updated after
Companies | Current company | Company name (any match), Company name match, Company LinkedIn URL, Company domain, Industry (include or exclude), Company headcount, Max results per company |
Past roles & companies | Past companies (with an option to require all of them), Past titles, Past seniority, Past function, Joined current job after, Left previous job after
Company firmographics | Startup programs, Funding stage, Annual revenue (USD), Employer headcount growth (%), Most recent funding after, IPO'd after, Valuation (USD), Stock exchange, Only at acquired companies, Only at bootstrapped companies
Locations | Person location | Country / region, State / province, City (each with exclude), or Within radius of a city (up to 500 miles or km) |
Company HQ location | Where the person's current employer is headquartered
Exclude | Exclude | Never worked at, Never held title, Exclude specific URLs, Exclude company domains, Exclude people already in my Cleanlist |
CRM | Salesforce or HubSpot | Shown only when a CRM is connected. See [CRM exclusions](#crm-exclusions) |
Bulk paste is available for job titles, LinkedIn URLs, company LinkedIn URLs, company domains, company names, and excluded company domains.
Title match
Title match decides how your job titles are matched:
Mode | Behavior |
Standard (default) | Matches titles that contain your words |
Broad | The most forgiving about wording |
Exact | Matches the full job title only, and turns off abbreviation expansion (VP and Vice President) |
A short title like "VP Sales" can return nobody on Exact, because few people have that exact title. Use Standard or Broad for those.
Company name match
Company name match applies to the company name box and to bulk-pasted names, on both tabs:
Mode | Behavior |
Standard (default) | Names containing what you typed, so "acme" matches Acme Corp |
Exact | The full company name only |
Broad | The most forgiving; returns the most results and the most noise |
Company LinkedIn URLs and company domains are always matched exactly. They are the most precise way to target named accounts.
Max results per company
Max results per company shows at most that many people per company, so one large employer does not crowd out the rest. Leave it empty for no cap. When you name between 2 and 100 companies and set a cap, Cleanlist searches each company on its own, the results header reads "N leads from M companies", and a note such as "No matches at 3 companies" lists the companies where nobody matched.
Startup programs
Startup programs (in Company firmographics on the People tab, and in Industry & type on the Companies tab) filters by accelerator, incubator and investor affiliations, such as Y Combinator or Techstars. For each program you choose Program participation, Investment portfolio or Other affiliation, and you can narrow to specific cohorts. With several programs selected, choose Any selected group or All selected groups. The program data is a Cleanlist-curated dataset.
Exclude section
Never worked at and Never held title remove people by past employers or titles
Exclude specific URLs removes individual LinkedIn profiles
Exclude company domains removes everyone at those companies
Exclude people already in my Cleanlist: Off, In any of my lists (anywhere), or In specific list(s). Use it to return net-new prospects only
CRM exclusions
With HubSpot or Salesforce connected, a CRM group appears with a section per CRM:
Exclude current customers
Exclude active opportunities
Exclude accounts I own (Salesforce) or Exclude records I own (HubSpot)
Exclude accounts owned by others or Exclude records owned by others
Exclude specific owners
Exclude an account status
Exclude by last activity
CRM integrations are on Pro and Enterprise. See Integrations.
People with more than one current role
When a person holds more than one current role, the row shows the employer that matched your filters. A +N chip lists their other current roles (up to 5).
The Companies tab
The Companies tab searches companies instead of people. Its filter groups:
Group | Sections |
Company | Company name & domain (with Company name match); Industry & type (Startup programs, Industry, Company type, Stock exchange) |
Locations | HQ location, plus where most employees are |
Metrics | Headcount, revenue & growth; Founded, funding & IPO (including year founded, Bootstrapped, Has been acquired) |
Workforce | Role mix & hiring growth |
The Companies tab has no Exclude or CRM sections.
Find contacts at companies
Click Find contacts on a company row, or select several companies and click Find contacts (N)
Find People switches to the People tab with those companies filled in as the current company. If you already had People filters set, you choose whether to keep them and add the companies, or start fresh
Add role filters (for example Title and Seniority), click Confirm, then Add to list
You can also save companies with Add to list (up to 2,500 per add). They land on the list's Companies sheet, where you can run Find People or Enrich Company from the Actions drawer.
Add to list
Click Add to list (or select rows first) to open the Add to list drawer:
How many to add: 100, 500, 1,000, 2,500, 5,000, or a custom number. One add takes up to 5,000 people (2,500 companies on the Companies tab)
Destination: pick one of your lists, or start typing to create a new one
Enrichment (people only):
Option | Cost |
No enrichment | Free. Import only |
Work email | 1 credit per work email found |
Email + phone | Up to 11 credits per person (1 for the email, 10 for the phone, each only if found) |
Click Add N to list
People already in the destination list are skipped and not charged; the confirmation says how many were skipped. Your plan's leads-per-list limit still applies (for example 100 on Free, 2,500 on Starter and Pro). See Plans.
Reveal a single contact
Result rows have Reveal email (1 credit) and Reveal phone (10 credits) buttons. Each looks up that one person through the waterfall, and there is no charge if nothing is found.
Save, History and Personas
Save: appears once filters are set. Name the search ("Name this search...") and click Save
History: opens Search History with two tabs, Recent (your last 10 searches) and Saved (up to 50). History is stored in your browser for the current workspace, so it does not follow you to another browser or device. The landing page also lists Recent searches
Personas: saved audiences shared with your whole workspace
Personas
Click Personas to open the Personas drawer ("Saved audiences, shared with your workspace."). A persona holds job titles (with Title match), seniority, department, skills, industry, company size, person locations and HQ locations.
Use persona applies a persona's filters to your search
New persona creates one, saved for everyone in the workspace under Workspace personas
Workspace default is the audience set up in your Agents settings ("From your Agents settings"). Make a copy turns it into an editable persona
Personas are available in People Search, Company Search, and the browser extension
Describe your search in plain language
The Find People landing page has a box: "Describe who you're looking for in plain language". Type something like "Heads of Sales at 51 to 200 employee SaaS companies in the United States" and Clu turns it into filters and runs a normal search. You can then adjust the filters by hand.
It uses your search allowance like any other search
On paid plans the request is charged like a Clu message. See Clu
AppSumo-only workspaces do not see the box and build searches with the filters. View tutorial under the box plays a short walkthrough
Paging and the hourly preview limit
Results come back in blocks of 100 and display 25 rows per page. The first block of any search is never limited. Loading more than 10 further blocks per hour per workspace shows "Hourly preview limit reached. Try again later." Add to list is not affected by this limit.
Costs at a glance
Action | Credits |
Running a search (either tab) | 0 (uses the search allowance) |
Add to list, no enrichment | 0 |
Work email on add, or Reveal email | 1 per email found |
Phone on add, or Reveal phone | 10 per phone found |
See Credits & Pricing for every action's price.
Tips for best results
Start narrow. Combine title, seniority and one company filter before widening.
Use domains for named accounts. Company domain and Company LinkedIn URL match exactly; names can be ambiguous.
Cap per company. Set Max results per company on account lists so big employers do not dominate.
Exclude what you already have. Turn on Exclude people already in my Cleanlist before adding to a list.
Add small first. Add 100 with Work email, check the results, then scale up.
